Step 3: With vessel and basket in hand, we continue along the river to a meadow of wildflowers. Here we meet the plant teachers who give us the gift of color. Using cauldron, stick, and fire, we explore the alchemy of plants to create a rainbow of colored wool.

Description

Description: Explore natural dyeing with the garden, working with the generous plants and animals of the land to create bright, beautiful yarns for your next project.

When: The class is from 10:00 to 3:00 on Saturday. Please arrive ten minutes early so we can begin on time.

Where: The Garden at Compass Rose Farms

What to bring: Wear comfortable clothing that can get stained. Bring a notebook and a sack lunch as we will have lunch together. Plastic bags or jars to transport your wet yarn home in.

What is included: All the tools, yarn, and dyestuffs we will be working with. Additional roving and batts made here at Compass Rose Wool Mill will be available in our onsite store.

What you will learn:

  • regional dye plants and how to prepare them
  • mordanting and how to prepare wool for dying
  • the dying process
  • drying and finishing your dyed yarn 

*Class is limited to 12 people to ensure each person gets personal hands-on instruction.
