Step 5: We arrive at the Circle of Grandmothers…12 ancient teachers and the spinning wheels they ride. Here, your feet learn to treadle and your hands to fly as you transform clouds of wool into strands of yarn.

Description

Description: Learn to spin on a spinning wheel, as we continue exploring plant and animal fibers that form the magical world of cloth. No experience or tools are necessary—we provide wheels, fiber, and patient guidance to get you spinning in a day.

When: The class is from 10:00 to 3:00 on Saturday. Please arrive ten minutes early so we can begin on time.

Where: The Fiber Studio at Compass Rose Farms

What to bring: Wear comfortable clothing,  and be prepared as we spin with our shoes off.  Bring a notebook and a sack lunch. If you own a working wheel please bring it so we can get it set up for you and you can begin building a relationship with your wheel. Let us know if you need help setting up a new wheel before class.

What is included: The workshop includes the use of our wheels and tools as well as the fiber we will be spinning.

We will have tea, you are welcome to bring snacks to share.

Additional roving and batts made here at Compass Rose Wool Mill will be available in our onsite store.

  • Parts and function of a spinning wheel
  • A short history of spinning
  • Types, uses, and sources of fiber
  • How to treddle, draft, and spin a single thread

Class is limited to six people to ensure each person gets personal hands-on instruction.
